An Overview of the Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor Certification in NJ

The New Jersey Lead Inspector / Risk Assessor performs an inspection to determine the presence of lead-based paint. A risk assessment report explains the results and options for reducing hazards.

Here are the steps to become licensed in NJ:

Meet ONE of the Following Prerequisites:

• Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in a related field* OR
• 1 year of experience in a related field AND proof of certification as a sanitary inspector-grade 1/Registered Environmental Health Specialist, health officer, industrial hygienist, engineer, registered architect, or environmental and scientific experience in a related field*.
• A high school diploma (or equivalent), and at least three years of experience in a related field*.
  *In the options above, “related field” is defined as “asbestos, lead, environmental remediation, building inspectors, construction-related health and safety inspections, or other types of environmental or inspection-type work.

1. Attend an NJ Lead Inspector / Risk Assessor Initial Class with an NJDOH training provider. If you are already certified and need to renew, attend a Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor Refresher course.
2. Register for The 2-Part Exam: Candidates may register online to sign up for the NJ Lead Inspector and NJ Lead Risk Assessor exams.
3. Apply to the NJDOH (NJ Department of Health) for your Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor certification ( View Application ).
